The patent, filed in December 2025 and published in July 2026, describes an AI system intended to run on data glasses, smartphones, smartwatches, and smart speakers. The software transcribes speech and analyzes acoustic features such as tone, speaking speed, sighs, or laughter in parallel with the spoken words. The detected emotional states are logged with timestamps together with the user’s location and current activity on servers to create an activity profile.
The system extends voice analysis with biometric sensor data: pupil size, blink rate, and tear production are intended to identify stress states or crying. Additionally, the AI monitors device behavior, such as dwell time on social media content or app-switching speed. One patent claim describes the integration of a virtual fitness coach that analyzes movement sequences during training via data glasses and adjusts training intensity based on detected states of exhaustion or motivation.
Similar approaches have existed before: Amazon integrated an emotion recognition feature called “Tone” into its fitness wristband Halo in 2020, but discontinued this product line in 2023. Meta’s filing goes further technologically through the combination of multiple data streams.
The regulatory landscape is substantial for a market launch. The EU AI Act has prohibited the use of emotion recognition AI in the workplace and educational institutions since February 2025. A further EU requirement, which comes into force in August 2026, requires providers in the consumer market to explicitly disclose biometric emotion recognition systems to users. So far, Meta has not made any product announcement for this technology.
