Microsoft and French AI startup Mistral AI are expanding their partnership with a multi-billion euro agreement. The deal focuses on expanding European computing capacity and integrating Mistral’s models into Microsoft’s portfolio.
At the core of the new agreement is a massive expansion of computing capacity in Europe. Microsoft will take direct operation of parts of the European hardware infrastructure built by Mistral, thereby serving growing demand for cloud and AI services on the continent. The partners did not publicly disclose the exact investment amount.
For European businesses and public institutions, the use of US AI solutions has been associated with significant legal and regulatory hurdles. This is where the partnership comes in: by integrating Mistral’s European AI models into Microsoft’s product portfolio, customers gain flexible deployment options. Applications can be operated in the public cloud, in locally attached infrastructures, or completely isolated (“fully disconnected”) – a decisive advantage for critical infrastructure operators, banks, the healthcare sector, and the manufacturing industry.
At the software level, Mistral brings two new flagship models: Mistral Medium 3.5 for cost-effective enterprise applications and OCR 4 for automated document processing. Both are immediately available in Microsoft’s development platform, and the Medium 3.5 model will also be integrated into Microsoft Copilot Studio. The partners plan to jointly market these solutions.
Strategically, Microsoft aims to reduce its dependence on US partner OpenAI in the area of generative AI and to involve other key players in the global AI ecosystem. For Mistral, the expansion of the alliance represents immediate access to Microsoft’s global distribution network and strengthens Europe as an AI location sustainably.
