Google is indexing publicly shared chat histories from the AI service DeepSeek, making them discoverable via search engines. Security researcher David Konitzny from Peec AI documented that users receive no explicit warning about this indexing when creating share links.
The security gap discovered by Peec AI affects chat histories shared via the sharing function with a public link in the /share/ directory of the domain chat.deepseek.com. Third parties can access these conversations through targeted Google search queries using the operator site:chat.deepseek.com/share. This is not a technical error, but rather a consequence of incomplete security communication.
When creating a link, DeepSeek does inform users that “anyone with the link” can access the conversation. However, the user interface lacks an explicit notice that the URL can be captured by search engines and listed in search results. Konitzny described the consequence: “In practice, this means that ‘anyone’ could potentially include people who discover the URL through a search engine, not just those with whom the link was intentionally shared.” Since users employ AI assistants for processing internal tasks, indexed chat histories can contain personal information, business reports, source code, or confidential documents.
The security researcher criticized the system design in general: “A powerful model can still pose significant data protection risks if the systems built around it are not developed with the same level of care.” The investigated available indexed links showed conversations in Russian comprising approximately 31 percent and in English around 20 percent of the sample.
Users have the option to delete publicly created links retroactively. This is done in the settings under the Data menu item and the management of shared links. After removal, access via the web is interrupted, although complete removal from Google’s indices may take additional time.
