Multilingualism Exposes Security Gaps in European AI Systems

AI security mechanisms and guardrails in many AI products do not offer uniform protection against jailbreaking and unsafe functionality across all languages. This represents a significant risk for multilingual environments, which are prevalent in Europe.

Safety layers and guardrails of AI models do not consistently protect against jailbreaking and bypass attempts equally across all languages. These language-dependent protection gaps arise because many models are primarily trained on English-language training data and their security mechanisms are optimized accordingly.

In Europe, where multilingualism is a standard state due to national and regional linguistic diversity, this asymmetric security level opens opportunities for attackers. They can attempt to manipulate the model or generate harmful outputs in less protected languages – for example, through prompt injection or other jailbreaking techniques that would be prevented in the English-language variant.

For CISOs and security officers, this means that the evaluation and risk assessment of AI systems must not be limited to the dominant language variant. Before deploying such systems in production, security testing should be conducted specifically in all locally relevant languages to identify protection gaps and implement mitigations.
