With the growth of decentralized AI systems, around 175,000 AI endpoints are emerging that are no longer concentrated in classical centralized data centers. This distributed architecture follows a different paradigm than the previous cloud and on-premises infrastructure. Each node can act independently, learn, and make decisions – without complete real-time synchronization with central control authorities.
For Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), this represents a fundamental shift in the risk surface. Decentralization renders conventional perimeter security obsolete: there is no longer a single point of control or enforcement. Each endpoint becomes a potential entry point for attackers, a possible source of data exfiltration, or a failure point in critical systems. Monitoring, patch management, and policy enforcement must be rethought.
Regulatory compliance becomes complex under these conditions: who bears responsibility for a decentralized AI node? What data passes through it, and where does it end up? How can an audit demonstrate that governance requirements are being met? The traditional approach of centralized documentation no longer works.
