AI Agents in Use at Nearly Half of German Tech Startups

The bottom line: Nearly all German tech startups use AI in some form, with autonomous agents and generative tools at the forefront.

A Bitkom survey of 102 German tech startups reveals broad adoption of artificial intelligence: 48 percent use autonomous AI agents, 65 percent develop their own AI applications.

The survey conducted by the digital association Bitkom demonstrates advanced AI integration in young companies. Of the 102 startups surveyed, 48 percent deploy autonomous AI agents that independently perform tasks such as code writing and testing, research, or complete workflows without individual manual intervention steps. Two-thirds of startups (65 percent) develop their own AI applications based on large language models from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, enriched with company-specific data. One-third of companies (30 percent) conduct targeted fine-tuning or training of existing models.

Generative tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or GitHub Copilot continue to dominate usage statistics: 87 percent of surveyed startups use these tools. In the mid-range are AI capabilities integrated into existing software products (59 percent), such as in office or customer relationship management systems.

Particularly noteworthy is that none of the 102 companies surveyed completely foregoes AI use in its business processes. The survey was conducted by Bitkom Research between calendar weeks 21 and 27 of 2026 as an online survey of tech startups in Germany. For CTOs, this means that AI integration is no longer an optional add-on but has become an industry standard – and that companies that adapt models with their own expertise can secure measurable competitive advantages.
