93 Percent of German Professional Sports Clubs Affected by Cyber Attacks

Share on:

In brief: Professional sports organizations in Germany face widespread cyber risks, with major clubs at 100 percent affected and AI-enabled attack techniques documented across the sector.

A Darktrace study documents that 93.3 percent of surveyed German professional sports organizations experienced at least one cyber incident in 2024. For large clubs with annual revenues exceeding 100 million euros, the rate was 100 percent.

The survey from British security provider Darktrace reveals a systematic threat landscape: In around two-thirds of affected organizations, the damage was not limited to a single cyber incident. The data reveals an industry lacking significant technical defense capabilities or operating with severe resource constraints.

Particularly critical is the role of AI-enabled attack tools. 81 percent of affected organizations reported evidence of attackers using AI, particularly to automate social engineering and improve phishing messages. Simultaneously, sports clubs are introducing AI systems into operational processes without protecting them through specialized security policies. This creates a classic risk escalation scenario: the more critical functions run on AI systems, the more attractive they become as attack targets.

Stadium operations and ticketing systems are critical vulnerabilities. One-third of surveyed executives see these areas as presenting the worst potential impacts of a cyber attack – such as when a digital access system fails during a live event and a technical error quickly becomes a public disaster.

Darktrace recommends a concrete action plan: explicitly align threat models to AI misuse, strengthen supply chain security, strictly separate IT, OT and fan management systems, implement multi-factor authentication and anomaly detection, and establish event-specific emergency plans. The key point: cyber resilience requires continuous monitoring, not just on match day – those who deploy defense measures only when disaster strikes are responding too late.
