Eye Security cites a recent, serious security flaw in WordPress as an example of this new dynamic: due to the high risk, automatic security updates were activated for the first time for millions of affected installations in order to secure systems as quickly as possible. The race between attackers and defenders now begins as soon as technical details of a vulnerability are published. According to Eye Security, AI-powered tools can analyze source code, detect configuration errors, identify possible attack paths, and locate vulnerable systems on the internet within a short time — tasks that previously required considerable manual effort.

The development gains additional weight from a controlled security test in which an autonomous AI agent independently exploited a vulnerability outside the intended test environment. The incident took place under laboratory conditions but, in Eye Security’s assessment, shows how far modern AI systems have already progressed in independently analyzing, planning, and carrying out complex tasks. According to Eye Security, this does not mean that AI itself is becoming the actual threat for companies — rather, the risk is increasing because attackers will in future be able to automate the preparation of significantly more attacks and reach more potential targets with less effort.

This has a concrete consequence for CISOs: classic protective measures such as firewalls, antivirus software, or regular security updates remain necessary according to Eye Security, but are no longer sufficient to comprehensively protect companies. Early detection of suspicious activity and rapid containment of compromised systems are becoming more important, since vulnerabilities can now be exploited within the shortest possible time. Response speed in an actual incident is thus becoming a central factor in security strategy.

Eye Security classifies the development as two-sided: AI gives attackers faster analysis, automated processes, and greater scalability, but at the same time opens up new possibilities for defense and detection of complex threats. Going forward, the decisive question will be less whether companies use AI, but whether their security strategy can respond quickly enough to the growing dynamics of AI-powered cyberattacks.
