Proofpoint is expanding its platform for data security and data governance with AI-powered capabilities for identifying and classifying sensitive information. Going forward, the solution will support automatic detection of sensitive data in six major European business languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. The aim is to make it possible to identify where business-critical or personal information resides, who can access it, and how it is used — regardless of language. The classifier library is also being extended with European categories such as national ID card and passport data, tax identification numbers, mobile phone numbers, and postal addresses from all EU member states. These classifications are linked to data loss prevention policies, allowing security policies to be derived automatically.
A central part of the expansion is the provisioning of Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) capabilities via Proofpoint’s data center in Frankfurt am Main. For security leaders, this means data residency and data protection requirements can be met without relying on processing outside Europe. According to Proofpoint, this gives security teams visibility into sensitive data holdings across cloud services, SaaS applications, email systems, endpoints, and on-premises IT environments.
For CISOs responsible for EU AI Act compliance, it is relevant that the platform assesses identified data risks and assigns matching governance and compliance measures to them. This makes it possible to determine where AI applications within the organization come into contact with sensitive data and what protective measures follow from that. According to Proofpoint’s “AI and Human Risk Landscape Report 2026,” the expansion is driven by the finding that 42 percent of surveyed organizations have already experienced a confirmed or suspected security incident related to artificial intelligence.
