Technological innovations have traditionally been introduced first by defenders in cybersecurity, and later adopted by attackers. Artificial intelligence differs fundamentally in the speed of its adaptation: cybercriminals do not need to go through years-long development cycles, but can immediately test new possibilities and integrate them into existing attack concepts. This creates a security situation where not individual vulnerabilities, but the organisational ability to continuously evolve becomes decisive.

The classical attack method as an isolated event is disappearing in favour of dynamic, multi-stage processes. Information gathering, target selection, technical preparation, and execution combine into continuously adapted attack sequences that AI systems can optimise in real time. This creates direct pressure on defence strategies based on fixed rules and static assumptions.

Another factor is the erosion of classical perimeter boundaries: the clear separation between trustworthy internal and dangerous external networks hardly exists anymore. Cloud platforms, external partners, mobile workplaces, and networked applications create complex hybrid environments with a growing number of digital identities and interfaces. AI intensifies this problem because it can analyse such complex landscapes faster than defenders can keep pace with them. The actual risk often lies not in individual security gaps, but in lacking transparency across the entire IT landscape.

For CISOs, this shifts priorities from maximum preventive hardening towards speed in detection and response. The central question is no longer simply “Are all systems protected?”, but rather “How quickly do we detect unusual activities? How quickly do we make decisions? How quickly can we limit impact?” The shorter the timespan between vulnerability and exploitation becomes, the more slow processes themselves become a security risk and require continuous adaptation of defence strategies.
