Meta Platforms is in discussions with AI company Anthropic about leasing computing power. The potential contract has a term of two years and could reach a value of up to ten billion US dollars. According to insiders, payments are to be made in monthly installments, with clauses for early exit. Anthropic proposed this deal in June 2026. Both companies declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations, which according to company statements are still in an early stage.
The deal would bring Meta into a new business area. To date, the company does not sell computing power to external customers – Meta uses its infrastructure primarily for its own AI training and advertising products. A cloud business would allow Meta to generate revenue outside of its traditional digital advertising business. At the annual shareholder meeting in May 2026, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had already hinted that entering cloud computing was “definitely an option,” as companies regularly approach Meta requesting access to AI models or free computing power.
With such a business model, Meta would enter into direct competition with specialized cloud providers such as CoreWeave or Nebius. Meta is currently building its own cloud infrastructure to market excess server capacity to developers and host AI models. The negotiations with Anthropic reflect the rapidly growing demand across the AI industry for computing capacity. Anthropic itself had already concluded a similar agreement with SpaceX in May 2026 to gain access to computing power from the Colossus-1 data center in Memphis.
