NVIDIA Spectrum-6: 102.4-Terabit Switch for Gigascale AI Infrastructures

NVIDIA has introduced the Spectrum-6, an Ethernet switch with 102.4 terabits per second capacity, delivering double the performance of the previous generation. The system is part of the Vera-Rubin platform and aims to solve network bottlenecks in coordinating hundreds of thousands of GPUs in large-scale AI training.

When training frontier models and operating agent-based AI, leading AI factories now work with hundreds of thousands of GPUs and CPUs. At this scale, network performance becomes a critical bottleneck: massive volumes of data must be continuously exchanged between thousands of accelerators, particularly in collective communication operations that require all devices to synchronize.

The Spectrum-6 switch chip system delivers 102.4 terabits per second — double the previous generation — and was specifically engineered for AI workloads. Unlike standard Ethernet, which was originally optimized for north-south traffic between users and servers, Spectrum-6 is designed for the synchronized data flows (east-west traffic) of a gigascale AI deployment. The system is integrated as part of the Vera-Rubin platform alongside ConnectX-9-SuperNIC, Vera-CPU, Rubin-GPU, NVLink-6-Switch, BlueField-4-DPU and supports liquid cooling for comprehensive efficiency.

CoreWeave, Microsoft, Nebius, SpaceX AI, and Tesla are among the first providers to integrate Spectrum-6 into their infrastructures. For cloud providers, this means more compute capacity can be operated as a unified, high-performance resource; for internal infrastructure operators, GPU utilization and resilience improve for long-running jobs. The expected result is shorter training times and better cost efficiency in gigascale operations.
