Windows Update Automatically Distributes LG Monitor App with McAfee Advertising

Bottom line: LG monitors receive an app via Windows Update that displays McAfee advertising with automatic renewal to a paid subscription on 31 out of 32 system startups.

Windows Update downloads a software component on certain LG monitors that regularly displays advertisements for a McAfee trial subscription – without users having to consent to this.

When certain LG monitors are connected to a Windows PC, extension and software packages are automatically downloaded and installed via Windows Update. This happens without prior consent or confirmation from the user. Immediately afterwards, the system loads the LG Monitor App Installer, which establishes itself on the system unprompted.

Tests conducted by tech channel Gamers Nexus with the LG UltraGear 34GX900A-B monitor model document the extent: On 31 out of 32 consecutive system startups, the application displayed an advertisement for a McAfee trial subscription. This trial offer automatically converts to a paid subscription after 30 days. On only one system startup, LG’s own native monitor utility was advertised instead.

Not only new devices are affected: The behaviour was also documented on an LG UltraFine 32UN880-B purchased three years prior. User complaints date back at least to 2024. Based on increasing reports, it can be assumed that a growing number of LG monitor models are now being supplied via this update mechanism.
