Anthropic is concentrating funding on five research areas: the impact of AI on workers at the enterprise and workplace level; programs to support transitions in an AI-transformed labor market; modernized income support systems; creating opportunities for workers to participate in AI-generated prosperity; and evidence on public investment. The fund aims to close knowledge gaps where previous empirical evidence is thin. The research must not only meet academic standards but also be practically applicable—fast enough to help inform decision-making.
The company plans to finance projects in the range of $5 to $30 million, with flexibility to go higher for highly ambitious ventures. Anthropic is particularly interested in pilot projects that are dramatically scalable if successful and that share findings publicly in a timely manner. This is an evolution of the Economic Futures Program launched a year ago, which has gathered previous findings.
While the fund initially focuses on the US market—also because Claude is currently used most there—it is intended to have global reach. Related to this is Anthropic’s view that AI capabilities are developing faster than traditional research and publication cycles can keep pace. The initiative is connected to Anthropic’s Economic Policy Framework, which outlined scenarios and measures in June 2024.
