Network as Central Control Instance for AI Security

Bottom line: Classical perimeter security is insufficient for AI-powered infrastructures; the network must become an active control instance for AI-specific threats.

Traditional network firewalls are based on a model that is fundamentally shifting: as AI systems decentralise data flows and create new attack vectors, the network becomes the primary security layer for controlling AI behaviour and data access.

Network firewalls have been considered a cornerstone of cybersecurity for decades: they block malicious traffic streams, prevent intruders and breaches. Classical security architecture is based on a stable model – users connect to applications, applications exchange data, security tools inspect packets, protocols and destinations. This model worked as long as network traffic remained predictable.

AI systems are changing this fundamental assumption. Modern large language models, machine learning pipelines and autonomous agents generate dynamic, hard-to-predict data streams. They scale beyond traditional user-to-application patterns, connect to external APIs, download models and exchange data with third parties – often without explicit control through classical network policy. At the same time, new attack vectors are emerging: prompt injections can cause AI models to disclose sensitive data; data exfiltration through AI agents escapes traditional inspection mechanisms; model poisoning and model theft require protection at the level of the model parameters themselves.

The network thus becomes a critical control instance not only for data flows, but for the behaviour of AI systems themselves. CISOs must rethink their network controls: not merely as packet filters, but as enforcement points for access and data policies that address AI-specific scenarios – such as restrictions on public model repositories, API access only to approved inference services, and real-time monitoring of model downloads and updates.
