In brief: Chats shared via Claude’s sharing feature were indexed by Google and thus publicly discoverable by third parties, without any system breach at Anthropic.
Hundreds of private and professional conversations with the AI chatbot Claude were temporarily discoverable via search engines. The cause appears not to have been a compromise of Anthropic’s systems, but rather the indexing of chats that users had shared via the built-in sharing feature.
Claude offers users the ability to share individual conversations via a publicly accessible link. As it turned out, chats shared in this way were crawled and indexed by search engines such as Google and could subsequently be found via simple search queries. According to information available so far, hundreds of conversations were affected, some of which contained sensitive private and professional content. According to the source, there was no breach of Anthropic’s infrastructure or vulnerability in the narrower sense.
For security officers, the incident is relevant because it highlights a structural risk of sharing features in AI applications: content shared via a link is technically considered publicly accessible as soon as the link becomes known or is discovered by search engines – regardless of whether users intended such reach. If trade secrets, customer data, internal strategy documents, or code snippets are entered into Claude for analysis and subsequently shared, this can lead to an uncontrolled leakage of confidential information without any attack in the classic sense having taken place.
This creates immediate need for action for companies that use Claude or comparable AI chatbots in their daily work. First, it should be examined whether and to what extent employees use Claude’s sharing feature and whether confidential or personal data could be involved in the process. Policies on the use of generative AI tools should explicitly address sharing features, for example by prohibiting the sharing of chats with confidential content or through technical controls, provided these are offered by Anthropic. It is also advisable to check whether company data is already circulating online via discoverable chat links, as well as to raise staff awareness of the implications of seemingly harmless sharing features.
