Supporting Google Account username change in your app

Arne Reimers, Software Engineer at Google Identity and Engagement. Julia Steier, Product Manager at Google Identity and Engagement. Cedric Strickland, Product Manager for Gmail. As of March 31, U.S. users can now change their Google Account username without losing their account, inbox, or any of their data. This update explains how your integration will be affected if your platform uses Sign in with Google or identifies users by email address, along with any actions you may need to take. Many people still use old email addresses that no longer represent who they are—due to a name change, a change in professional identity, or simply a username they’ve outgrown. With this change, when a user updates their username, their original email address will be kept as an alternative address linked to the same account. Both messages are directed to the identical inbox. Users are still able to sign in and send/receive emails with either option. This feature was previously limited to business Workspace users, but we’re now making it available to personal Google Accounts using @gmail.
