The European Commission has published guidelines for implementing Article 50 of the EU AI Act. Transparency obligations for providers and deployers of AI systems enter into force on 2 August 2026.
The EU AI Act divides AI systems into four categories based on a risk-based approach. One of these comprises systems with transparency risks, which are subject to the requirements of Article 50. The new guidance clarifies which transparency obligations apply to providers and deployers of such systems.
The Commission has developed the guidance to provide authorities, AI providers and deployers with practical orientation. The aim is to ensure uniform, effective, proportionate and consistent compliance with transparency obligations. The guidance addresses both actors in the value chain differently.
In addition to the main guidelines, the Commission has published supplementary materials: a specialized document on transparency in AI-generated content, a question-and-answer format on Article 50, a brief overview, and a code of conduct on transparency of AI-generated content. These materials are intended to facilitate practical implementation.
