🔬Doing Vibe Physics — Alex Lupsasca, OpenAI

A lot of people are losing their minds over GPT 5.5. Certain individuals. This is the tale of the Jagged Frontier. People using AI for tasks like drafting emails or implementing code experience only a moderate productivity boost, while those aggressively testing the model’s boundaries are discovering that those boundaries have expanded. Alex Lupsaska has been monitoring this shifting frontier for the past year and a half. When GPT-3.5 was released, it managed to recreate one of my best papers—which had taken me an incredibly long time to develop—in just 30 minutes. Alex also points out that this change went largely unnoticed. I remember when GPT-5 dropped… the reaction on Twitter was pretty lukewarm. Many people reacted with disappointment, saying they had anticipated far more and that it wasn’t any better at composing emails. And I recall thinking, well, all right, GPT-3 is capable of writing emails.
