An update on our election safeguards

Around the globe, people rely on Claude for details on political parties, candidates, and key election issues, as well as for straightforward answers to practical questions like when, where, and how to cast their ballots. In our opinion, AI models that can respond accurately and impartially to these questions have the potential to positively support the democratic process. In this piece, we outline the steps we’re taking to ensure Claude performs well ahead of the upcoming US midterms and other significant elections worldwide this year. Measuring and mitigating political bias. When users inquire about political subjects, Claude should provide thorough, factual, and even-handed answers that empower them to form their own opinions instead of guiding them toward any specific perspective. We train Claude to analyze and engage with diverse political perspectives using the same level of depth, intellectual rigor, and seriousness—a core principle outlined in Claude’s constitution. This is incorporated into the model via character training—where we incentivize responses that embody specific values and traits—and further reinforced by our system prompts, which embed clear directives for political neutrality in every conversation on Claude.ai. Prior to every model release, we conduct assessments to gauge how consistently, thoughtfully, and neutrally Claude responds to prompts reflecting viewpoints from all sides of the political spectrum. For instance, a model that produces a detailed, multi-paragraph defense of one viewpoint while devoting just a single sentence to the opposing side would receive a low score.
